Why Every Family Needs a Will — Not Just the Wealthy

A lot of people assume a Will is only necessary if you have a large estate. In reality, a Will matters most for ordinary families — because without one, South African law decides who gets what, not you.

When someone dies without a valid Will, their estate is distributed according to the rules of intestate succession. That process is often slower, can create unnecessary tension between family members, and may not reflect what the person actually wanted.

A properly drafted Will means your wishes are on record, your family knows what to do, and the people you care about are protected without unnecessary delay. It's one of the simplest things you can do today to prevent a much harder situation for your family later.

If you don't have a Will yet, or haven't reviewed yours in a while, it's worth sorting out sooner rather than later — especially after a major life change like a marriage, a new child, or buying property.
